Dr. Matthias Balsam is a senior process analytics (PAT) application engineer at Bayer AG, specializing in implementing modern analytical technologies for pharmaceutical R&D and production. He is an expert in advanced spectroscopic methods, particularly NIR- and Raman spectroscopy, and digital process monitoring, which enables real-time understanding and control of processes under GMP conditions. Prior to joining Bayer, Dr. Balsam conducted research in process analytics and applied biochemistry at TH Köln, focusing on process understanding and online chromatography.
At Bayer, Dr. Balsam spearheads cross-functional PAT and automation projects, from early process development and implementation in GMP production and contributing to the shift toward digitalized, data based manufacturing. Furthermore, Dr. Balsam lead the AK-3.6.3 PAT-Innovation group at NAMUR and the PAT-Innovation activities within Bayers global PAT Community. Dr. Balsam regularly shares insights and best practices at industry forums, such as PAT Connect and NAMUR meetings. Additionally, to that, Dr. Balsam gives the lecture in online analytics at the bachelor’s program of the University of Applied Science Fresenius in Idstein. He earned his doctorate in process and analytical technology from Hochschule Fresenius in Idstein.
